Kid Bicycle Accidents – Helmets Protect Against Head Injury

The single most important thing you can do to reduce serious injury among children riding bicycles, skateboards, and rollerblades is to make sure they are wearing a helmet every time they set out to ride. Here are some statistics to drive home the point:

  • Each year, approximately 140 children are killed on bikes.
  • Children sustain more than 275,000 nonfatal bicycle injuries each year.
  • Nearly 690 children are injured daily due to bicycle accidents.
  • Other than the car, bikes are the cause of more childhood injuries than any other consumer product.
  • 75% of fatal head injuries among child bicyclists could have been prevented by wearing a bicycle helmet.
  • More children ages 5-14 are seen in hospital emergency rooms for injuries related to biking that any other sport.
  • Helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by 85% and severe brain injury by 88%.

Regardless of the statistics, national estimates report that only 15-25% of children that bicycle wear helmets.

Other than understanding the importance of wearing a helmet for safety, it is also important for parents to understand where bicycle fatalities occur the most. Statistics show that 53% of child bicycle fatalities occur when a child is riding on a minor road compared with 46% when riding on a major road (highway). Also, 58% occur at non-intersection locations.

If you are a parent or watch children bicyclists under the age of 16, please have them wear  a helmet to protect them in the event of a bicycle accident.

If you or someone you love has been in a bicycle accident, please contact an experienced bicycle accident lawyer to ensure your rights are protected and you receive adequate compensation for your injuries and medical bills.

Madison Police Department gets Grant for Ticketing Bikers

The Madison Police Department received a state grant to start ticketing downtown and campus bikers for violating bike laws.  This grant will be in effect from now until October.  The Police will be heavily issuing tickets on specific days to increase bike safety in the Madison area, according to the Traffic Enforcement Safety Team.

As we all know officers ticket motor vehicles for violating laws or bicycle rights, however it has become a great concern of the community that bikers following who are not following the laws are not getting punished at all, which in the end is causing for more safety issues.

A huge complaint is that often time’s bikers will run red lights or not stop at stop signs because it is too much effort to do so, however this could run into serious problems some even ending in death.

According to Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coordinator Arthur Ross, there is no difference in the rules of operating a bike compared to driving a car and for him the real issue is for everyone to consider how their actions impact the safety of everyone.

He added that when bicyclists do not follow the laws, legislators see that and are less likely to work on issues like bikers’ rights.

Participant Dies in Triathlon

A 43-year-old woman, Kim Schmidt, was pronounced dead when found floating in like Winneconne during the swimming portion of a triathlon in Winnebago County, Wisconsin.  Kim was taking part in her first outdoor triathlon when the accident occurred.

Coaches recommend swimming in open waters, not just local or indoor lap pools, in order to prepare properly for race conditions. Waves and the added difficulty of people climbing over you can cause certain competitors to freeze up or panic causing lack of oxygen into their lungs.

Some athletes push for more regulations of swimmers and a rigorous test. Perhaps this may prevent future incidents of injury or death amongst triathletes in open water swims.

Keeping Bicycles Safe on the Road

Posted by rozeklawoffice on July 28, 2009 under Bicycle Accidents | Be the First to Comment

Most bicyclists know that they are supposed to have three feet of clearance when a car goes to pass them, however it is defiantly not something bicyclists should rely on for safety.  The need to realize that not every driver knows these rules and if you get hit by a car, its going to do a lot more than hurt.

Bicycles are supposed to have the same rights as cars, but we all know that if it comes to life and death a car will have the upper hand in the fight.  For all you bicyclists out there please keep in mind that all though you believe you should have the same rights as those in cars, your safety is at the top of the priorities.

Bicycles and cars share the roadways, they always have, but by this rule that means that they should follow the same laws and principles.  Just like a car stops at a red light so should a bicycle.  A Red stop light is not and should not be treated like a stop sign to bicyclers.  Treating it like a stop sign is only putting yourself and danger towards the oncoming traffic.  Also, all the other laws of the road need to be obeyed by bicyclists for their safety such as no left turns on red and stopping before turning right on red.

All these rules are set to not only protect drivers of cars but also drivers of bicycles, please keep all these helpful hits in mind while on the road, hopefully they will help keep you out of harms way.
