Enforcement of the new laws will be under jurisdiction of the local police department. At the time of a traffic stop or car accident , drivers must provide proof of auto insurance. If unable to provide proof but do in fact have insurance you will be allowed to show proof later, however will be subject to a $10 fine. If you do not have auto insurance you will be subject to a fine up to $500. If in the case of providing fraudulent proof of insurance you will be subject to a fine up to $5,000.
Please also note that with the recent law change, there will be a change in how auto accident claims are settled. An example of this change is in stacking (when uninsured motorist & underinsured motorist coverage’s are combined from multiple policies if the at-fault driver insures more than one car). Stacking under the new laws will be limited to the combined coverage of three household vehicles.
As far as receiving auto insurance, the insurance companies may not place you in any high risk category, if you previously lacked auto insurance. People who did carry insurance on there vehicles have the possibility to experience a rate increase, if your current coverage limits are below the new mandates. Remember that the premiums are based on factors such as age, experience, claim history, vehicle type, driving record, and other variables. If you have questions on your policy or policies ask you insurance agent to review it with you to insure you are receiving the proper rate.
We hope this helps you in understanding Wisconsin new auto insurance policies. Please remember to drive safely this coming winter.
