Plastic surgeons recommend eating more protein such as eggs, fish, nuts, and lean meat at least 2 weeks before your surgery. Protein rich foods boost the production of collagen which helps speed up healing. Taking a daily multi-vitamin also can help. Research shows that getting enough vitamin C, zinc, and magnesium may reduce scarring.
As your incision wound is healing, apply an antibiotic ointment and keep it covered. The ointment and covering of the wound prevents the hard scabbing which can inhibit new tissue growth. Once a week or so has passed, you can switch from the ointment to a lotion. Continue to apply the lotion following the closure of the wound.
When the stitches are out, make sure to use SPF to prevent UV rays from simulating the skin cells which can cause discoloration. If you still notice scarring, you can contact your dermatologist to prescribe cream to fade the mark or you can contact a plastic surgeon.
