The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office released the information to WMTV.
Officials said the driver was 18-year-old Bailey Connery, of the Village of Oregon.
According to WMTV, a forensic autopsy was completed at the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. Preliminary results of that autopsy confirm Connery’s death was the result of injuries he sustained in the crash and subsequent fire.
Additional testing is underway at this time.
The incident occurred the afternoon of April 14 about 3 p.m. According to Fitchburg police, officers were dispatched to South Syene Road, just north of Byrne Road, for a single vehicle roll-over crash.
The car ran off the road and struck a tree. The vehicle caught fire with Connery still inside prior to emergency services arriving. Attempts by first responders and witnesses to get the young man out of the car were unsuccessful, according to authorities.
Dane County Sherriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Team assisted in the investigation and the preliminary investigation shows that speed was a factor in the crash.
Syene Road from Byrne Road to Old Indian Trail was closed off as officials worked the scene.
The incident remains under investigation by the City of Fitchburg Police and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
