Dane County authorities identified the death of a 72-year-old Oregon woman on the morning of the crash.
“According to information from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, she was driving north on US 14 near CTH A, when she hit another car head-on. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only person in her car,” according to an article by WKOW.
There were four people riding in the car the woman hit and all were reportedly injured as a result of the impact. They were taken to the hospital from the scene of the crash. One of those people, the driver was identified as 93-year-old Benjamin Blum of Madison, who had to be med-flighted. Blum was originally expected to recover from his injuries.
Dane County Sheriff’s officials confirmed Friday morning that Blum died at UW Hospital as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office was scheduled to perform an autopsy Friday morning.
“It was originally believed that Blum was the driver of the Dodge Durango, but in fact it was discovered he was a rear passenger in the vehicle, which was hit head-on,” according to the article. “The actual driver of the vehicle was 79-year-old Raphael Shunk of Madison.”
Another car traveling north was also involved in the crash. The driver was the only person in the car and was reportedly not injured. He is 26-year-old Jared Bland of Crystal Lake, IL.
The road was shut down for more than three hours Wednesday morning while authorities reconstructed the crash site. All lanes were reported to be open as of 11:30 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation and no other information has been released.
