Carbon monoxide poisoning hospitalizes 13 people at Manitowoc Hospital with four others transported to the Milwaukee Hospital for intensive treatment.
Earlier this morning in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, several local businesses in the vicinity of the 1200 block of Washington Street, including apartment buildings that reside above said businesses have been evacuated.
According to Manitowoc Fire/Rescue Chief Todd Blaser, fire crews were alerted about a possible carbon monoxide leak around 9:15 a.m.
A resident who lives on the second floor of the apartments located above an affected business reported seeing a number of sick people.
17 people – 10 on the second floor and seven in the first floor café – were seen by paramedics and then taken to the hospital for further testing.
Scott Cochrane, a local resident whose wife works at Susy’s Café, one of the businesses evacuated, rushed to the hospital after learning his wife was one of the people being treated.
“I was very concerned, I know carbon monoxide is the deadly killer,” Cochrane, told Fox 11 News in Green Bay, Wisconsin. “I was immediately on the phone and when I couldn’t get a hold of anybody, I was very concerned.”
At this time, firefighters are still trying to piece together where the carbon monoxide leak originated.
“There are multiple common areas that these buildings do share, so it’s really kind of difficult to decide where, if anything is a fuel fire of where that origin may have come, so that’s where it is going to take some time,” Blaser specified to Fox 11 News.
