Two people are dead following a two-car crash in Sheboygan County.
According to various media reports, the incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16, at the intersection of State Highway 57 and County Road FF in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan County.
“When deputies arrived, the passenger, a 79 year-old woman was found dead at the scene. The 80-year-old man who was driving died on the way to HSHS Saint Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan as a result of his injuries,” according to an article by NBC 26 News. “Both were from rural Elkhart Lake Wisconsin.”
The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office recently released the names of the two people who died. The two individuals have been identified as 80-year-old Lewis Schmidt and his wife, 79-year-old Geraldine Schmidt.
“A 72 year-old woman in the other car from rural Kiel had serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center,” the article reads. “According to deputies, the preliminary investigation indicated that one vehicle was east bound on County Road FF and failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with the vehicle traveling northbound on State Highway 57 in the intersection.”
The article does not mention which car failed to stop.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, at least 10 people have died as a result of a fatal crash in Sheboygan County so far this year. Thirteen people were killed on Sheboygan County roads last year as a result of a vehicle crash. An average of 10 people died from 2013-2015 on Sheboygan County roads.
An average of 509 people died as a result of a crash on Wisconsin roads between 2009-13. In 2014, 451 people died as a result of a crash on a Wisconsin road and 28,801 people were reportedly injured in a crash.
