A teenager who was fleeing from police crashed a vehicle, killing one and injuring others on Nov. 29.
According to various media reports, 18-year-old Samira Coleman-Wilks was driving a Chevrolet Impala along N. 27 th Street about 9:45p.m. that Saturday. A criminal complaint says that Milwaukee police officers who were on patrol along that street noticed the Chevrolet Impala had a suspended registration plate.
“The officers pulled over the vehicle – driven by Coleman-Wilks. As officers approached the vehicle, the Chevrolet suddenly accelerated northbound on N. 27th Street,” an article by FOX6 News reads. “A few moments later, the officers hear a large crash sound and observed a large cloud of smoke coming from the intersection of N. 27th Street and W. Capitol Drive.”
A passenger in the Impala driven by Coleman-Wilks, 20-year-old Shawn Oliver, died from injuries he sustained as a result of the crash. Another man who was a passenger in the vehicle told FOX6 News he has been physically and mentally scarred from the crash. Adrian Pyatt said he still has nightmares about the incident.
“It messes me up in the head to know that one boy died and the other in a coma and she is paralyzed from the waist down,” Pyatt is quoted as saying in the article. “Pyatt was asleep in the car when the wreck happened. He was startled awake by a screeching noise. His face and shoulder struck the dashboard, according to the criminal complaint.”
Pyatt told news reporters he woke up and couldn’t move due to a shoulder injury. When he did eventually get out of the car, he just started crying.
“The complaint indicates investigators downloaded the airbag control module from the Impala and found the ‘vehicle was traveling at 83 mph with throttle at 100 percent, just prior to impact.’ The speed limit in that area is 30 mph,” the article reads. “Meaning the defendant was traveling 53 mph over the speed limit. The complaint also indicates Coleman-Wilks never had a valid driver’s license of any sort.”
There were three people in the vehicle struck who were also injured, but with non-life threatening injuries – two men, ages 28 and 29, and a 22-year-old woman.
Coleman-Wilks of Milwaukee now faces multiple criminal charges in connection with the fatal crash.
