A 23-year-old man was killed last Tuesday in a crash that shut down Interstate 41 in Green Bay for several hours. According to an article posted on the WBAY website, authorities recently identified the man as being 23-year-old Jason Broeckel, who was reportedly from the Howard area.
“Broeckel was in a car that collided with a dump truck driven by a 42-year-old man from the Green Bay area,” the article reads. “They crashed near Shawano Avenue, also known as State Highway 29.”
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is reportedly still investigating how the crash happened and no further details the incident were available as of the morning of January 12. There’s no mention as to whether anyone involved is facing potential charges in connection to the crash.
“Roads were slippery Tuesday morning because of snow and a wintry mix, but authorities haven’t said if the weather contributed to the crash,” WBAY reports.
The Wisconsin DOT contracts with all 72 county highway departments in the state to maintain the state highway system. There are 113,000 miles of local streets and county and state highways in Wisconsin, including 11,508 miles or 34,339 lane miles of state maintained highways.
The Milwaukee County Metro Area has 1,136 lane miles to plow during winter weather and snow storms. This figure includes freeway lane miles, ramps and frontage roads. The downtown area, however, is maintained by the City of Milwaukee and not the Milwaukee County Highway Department.
Wisconsin average snowfall ranges from about 40 inches in the south to as much as 160 inches along the shores of Lake Superior. On average, about 35 to 40 winter weather events hit Wisconsin each winter, according to the DOT.
Frost on bridge decks and pavements typically occurs in October, November, and March.
