A massive pileup of about 30-40 vehicles was reported in Wisconsin last Tuesday. The Weather Channel reports that icy roads were a contributing factor in the chain-reaction crash. At least one person was injured as a result.
Winter Storm Jupiter has reportedly killed at least seven people after frozen precipitation created dangerous driving conditions from the Texas Panhandle through the Plains and all the way up to Michigan.
Multiple states declared emergencies ahead of the storm, and accidents – some fatal – were reported across the region.
“Tuesday a driver was sent to a hospital with minor injuries after icy roads led to a pileup involving an estimated 30 to 40 vehicles , the article reads. “The Dane County Sheriff’s Office began receiving calls around 4:30 a.m. when drivers were unable to navigate an icy hill and curve on Highway G.”
The Weather Channel reports that cars were hitting the guard rail and multiple vehicles ended up in a cornfield. When morning commuters made their way across Wisconsin roads, more and more vehicles began to pile up.
“Dane County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Elise Schaffer told Madison.com that deputies were called out to 70 incidents Monday night due to terrible road conditions ,” the article reads. “We had 80 vehicles, seven semi-trailers, including three jackknifed trucks, three salter trucks, two tow trucks and two squad cars in slide-offs, said Schaffer.”
Because of hazardous conditions on the roadways, several school districts either delayed or canceled classes all together.
Several jackknifed semis also forced authorities to close a stretch of Highway 26.
Freezing rain led to multiple slide-offs and collisions. So many that police began to only respond to injury crashes.
“Chris Kelley, street superintendent for the city of Madison, told the Wisconsin State Journal that drivers should expect rough travel to continue,” the article reads. “Ugly, icy conditions persist,” Kelley said Monday afternoon. “All roadway users should anticipate a challenging evening commute, that will require everyone to make good choices.”
