Three teenagers were killed in a crash last Friday and a truck driver remained in the hospital as of last Sunday, fighting for her life.
According to various media reports, the incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Melvin and Clarno roads just south of Monroe in the township of Clarno.
“First responders on the scene from Monroe extinguished a fire on one of the cars,” an article on the WXOW website reads. “Three persons were airlifted to the UW Hospital in Madison, while one was pronounced dead the scene.”
The other two students died shortly after being transported to the hospital.
A news release from the Green County Sheriff’s Office said initial reports indicated a sedan was traveling westbound on Melvin Road, when it failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a northbound truck.
The roads were closed for about six hours following the collision to permit the county and the Wisconsin State Patrol to investigate the crash scene.
Three sophomore high school students were killed as a result of injuries they sustained in the crash, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
People were informed of the accident via an e-mail Friday night sent to students’ parents by MHS principal Chris Medenwaldt.
“The Green County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Gage P. Noble, 16, of rural Monroe, who died at the scene,” the WSJ reports. “His passengers were Anya T.L. Teasdale, 16, and Joseph T. Wyss, 15, also of Monroe, who were taken by medical helicopter to UW Hospital, where they died Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office said”
The driver of the truck, who has been identified as Jennifer L. Hopkins, 35, of rural Monroe, remained in the hospital in serious condition as of last Sunday.
Alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash, according to statements from the sheriff’s office.
Students and friends have left memorials for their friends and gathered to remember them. Various media reports say it’s unclear where the students were headed at the time of the crash.
