A Western Wisconsin man was killed as a result of a motorcycle crash last Sunday.
According to various media reports about the motorcycle crash , the person who died was a 33-year-old man who resided in Start Prairie, Wisconsin. The man reportedly fell from his motorcycle as a result of the incident.
“Reed Shipley was southbound on County Hwy. CC/Wall Street in Star Prairie on Friday and was behind a turning truck when a 2012 Chevrolet Impala traveling east on County Hwy. C/CC drove into the intersection, according to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office,” an article published by the Star Tribune reads.
A sheriff’s office news released explained that because the Impala drove into the intersection, Shipley slammed on his breaks to avoid striking the car. When he did this, he lost control of his motorcycle and was ejected from the bike.
The car and motorcycle did not collide.
The news release also explained that Shipley was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
“Shipley was transported to the hospital, where he died of his injuries Sunday,” the Star Tribune article reads. “The Impala driver, Angela Berg, and her three minor passengers were not injured.”
The article does not mention what type of injuries Shipley died from.
The crash is the third traffic fatality in the county this year, according to the news release.
In a 2013 crash statistics report, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reports that 527 persons were killed in Wisconsin motor vehicle traffic crashes. This is an average of just over one life lost each day on Wisconsin roads.
That same year, 39,872 persons were injured in 28,747 reported injury crashes and 491 fatal crashes. More than 3,000, or 8 percent, of those injured were known at the time of the crash to have sustained incapacitating injuries.
Of the 527 persons killed, 9 percent (35 pedestrians and 10 bicyclists) were not drivers or passengers of motor vehicles. Sixteen percent (83) were motorcycle drivers or motorcycle passengers.
Seventy three percent of all motorcyclists killed in crashes (for instances in which helmet use could be determined) were not wearing helmets, according to the WisDOT.
