A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Milwaukee’s south side Tuesday. According to an article published by CBS-58 , the 62-year-old was struck near 35 th and Mitchell about 3:30 p.m. in front of Greenfield Bilingual School.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the man didn’t stop, but kept driving.
“When he got hit, he got thrown in the air and he smacked onto the floor,” a witness told the news station. “[The driver] kept going. That’s crazy,” she said.
The article says there are unconfirmed reports that the man was walking two children across the street when he was struck.
“He pushed them out of the way as soon as he saw the dude coming, and he smacked him” a witness said. “It was too late to get himself out of the way. To save his kids he threw them out of the way, and that’s what a father is supposed to do, is save their kids.”
Due to an investigation into the pedestrian hit and run, police closed a portion of 35 th street for several hours to interview witnesses and take measurements of the crime scene.
“It’s a tragedy to see someone lose their life, and have two small kids growing up without a father,” another witness told CBS.
The Milwaukee Police Department said they believe they’ve found a vehicle that was involved in the hit and run and they are currently working to confirm that it is the vehicle that struck the victim.
The driver of that vehicle still hasn’t been found.
Witnesses told CBS they were shocked saying “who does that,” and that “they should turn themselves in” to police.
In 2001, one pedestrian was injured or killed every 5 hours and 12 minutes in Wisconsin,” according to a study by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
About 60 pedestrians are killed each year in Wisconsin and another 350 are seriously injured. Another 1,200 or more suffer injuries ranging from minor to serious, but not incapacitating. Only 36 pedestrians escaped injury in these crashes.
A study into pedestrian crashes in Wisconsin revealed that the most common type of crash involves a person crossing an intersection.
