One person was killed and another critically injured following a head-on collision in the Town of Lima on Monday. According to an article by the Daily Union, the man who died was from Janesville.
The incident occurred on State Highway 59 by East Gould Road in the Town of Lima about 5:43 p.m., according to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, who responded to the two-vehicle crash.
Photos of the scene show the two vehicles that were involved in the collision were a sedan and a van.
“Preliminary investigation through physical evidence and witness statements at the scene revealed that the man had been driving the van east on State Highway 59,” the article reads. “The female reportedly was driving the sedan west in the eastbound lane of traffic, resulting in the collision.”
Sheriff’s officials who responded to the scene told media reporters they aren’t sure why the westbound vehicle deviated from its lane and that there were no signs of impairment involved in the crash. The incident is still under investigation.
An initial sheriff’s reports indicated that two people were injured as a result of the head-on collision and when officials arrived on scene, at least one person was already without a pulse and wasn’t breathing.
Fire and EMS workers extricated both drivers from their vehicles. At that time officials were able to confirm that one person was dead and one was in critical condition, the Daily Union reports.
“The deceased was a 59-year-old Janesville man, while the other motorist was a 52-year-old Whitewater woman,” the article reads. “According to a witness, the woman was transported by Whitewater EMS to Mercy North Hospital in Janesville and then flown to University of Wisconsin-Madison by Med-Flight helicopter.”
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office reported this week that the female driver is in critical, but stable condition as a result of injuries she sustained in the crash.
Traffic charges might be pending against the Whitewater woman.
