What is a TBI?

According to the Mayo Clinic, traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an external mechanical force causes brain dysfunction. Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head such as a concussion. An object penetrating the skull, such as a shattered piece of skull, also can cause traumatic brain injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury may cause temporary dysfunction of brain cells. More serious traumatic brain injury can result in bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage to the brain that can result in long-term complications or death.

Symptoms of TBI

Cognitive: amnesia, inability to speak or understand, mental confusion, difficulty concentrating, difficulty thinking and understanding, inability to create new memories, or inability to recognize common things

Behavioral: abnormal laughing and crying, aggression, impulsivity, irritability, lack of restraint, or persistent repetition of words or actions

Whole body: balance disorder, blackout, dizziness, fainting, or fatigue

Mood: anger, anxiety, apathy, or loneliness

Eyes: dilated pupil, raccoon eyes, or unequal pupils

Gastrointestinal: nausea or vomiting

Sensory: sensitivity to light or sensitivity to sound

Speech: slurred speech or impaired voice

Also common: persistent headache, a temporary moment of clarity, bleeding, blurred vision, bone fracture, bruising, depression, loss of smell, nerve injury, post-traumatic seizure, ringing in the ears, or stiff muscles

What do I do if I have TBI?

  • Seek medical attention even if you are no longer experiencing symptoms after a few hours.
  • Speak with an experienced brain injury attorney about your symptoms.
Although office locations are in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin attorney Randy Rozek represents clients all across the state and can be your Oshkosh brain injury lawyer.

Brain Injury Association of America recommends to:
  • Avoid doing anything that could cause another blow or jolt to the head.
  • Ask your doctor when it’s safe to drive a car, ride a bike, or use heavy equipment, because your ability to react may be slower after a brain injury.
  • Take only the medications your doctor has approved, and don’t drink alcohol until your doctor says it’s OK.
  • Write things down if you have a hard time remembering.
  • You may need help to re-learn skills that were lost so you should contact the Brain Injury Association in your state to learn more about the programs, supports and services available to people with brain injury and their families.
