A teenage girl’s family in Miami-Dade County is suing the company that makes inflatable sumo wrestling costumes for allegedly causing her to have brain damage. The 15 year old girl, Celaida Lissabet, and her mother sued the charter school Mater Academy and Mega Party Events. The lawsuit contends that the suits are used for “violent recreational sumo wrestling games.” The lawsuit also alleges that the company knew of similar incidents that had happened that makes the suit dangerous.
Lissabet was wearing the suit during the “Spirit Day” at her school and was having a “match” with a classmate when her head repeatedly hit the floor, allegedly causing trauma to her brain. According to Adrian De La Rosa, the owner of Mega Party Events, Lissabet was wearing the suit according to the manufacturer’s instructions. She states that, “the suit is fairly safe. We’ve never had an injury like this. We really hope that she is ok.”
The Lissabets say that the school did not make sure that the head gear fit correctly on Celaida’s head. She was later rushed to the hospital for blurred vision, dizziness, nausea, and headaches,” according to the lawsuit. The Lissabet’s attorney says that Celaida now sits in her room and doesn’t communicate with people, which is a complete turnaround from what she used to be. She also exhibits severe anxiety.
Mega Party Event’s insurance company is investigating whether or not Lissabet was injured prior to the event.
