In a recent study conducted at the University of Iowa, researchers discovered that certain compounds could prevent brain cells from certain types of traumatic brain injury. In the experiment, the mice were treated 24 to 36 hours later for a traumatic brain injury due to a blast. During the trial, researchers discovered that the compound prevented the lasting effects associated with TBI.
Traumatic brain injury is one of the most common health problems that men and women from the military face. Out of more than two million US soldiers, 10 to 20 percent experience a TBI. The group of compounds were known as P7C3 series, and protected from TBI effects such as movement, learning and memory. These compounds activate molecular pathways within the brain that preserve the neuronal level of an energy molecule.
Andrew Pieper, professor of psychiatry and senior study author said that a lack of treatment for TBI is a primary issue concerning American society. Everyone who has gotten involved in the work wants to give assurance to patients for both civilians and military personnel.
As of right now, the compound has only been administered orally to mice. However, even mice who were treated 24 to 36 hours after the TBI were noted to be protected from the harmful effects. Additionally, the compound could be used to treat other harmful diseases such as Parkinson’s and ALS. The University of Iowa published the study September 11, 2014, in the Cell journal.
The National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Science Foundation and the Veterans Health Administration helped to partially fund this research. In the past, researchers discovered that P7C3 molecules could help brain injuries caused by concussion , and it is possible that the compound could be used to help with strokes. By enhancing the P7C3 compound’s original structure, researchers improved the potency of the drug.
