According to an article by the Northwest Herald , Tom Eppers was attacked at his home, located in Twin Lakes. Eppers was reportedly in a coma following the attack and his wife, Dawn, has told reporters that her husband, who is a businessman, is now making big strides towards recovery.
“The Twin Lakes Police Department responded to the Eppers’ residence about 3 a.m. Dec. 25 in the 1100 block of Pebble Beach Court, Twin Lakes police said in the article. “The 58-year-old was found with severe injuries to his head, and evidence indicated an altercation occurred in the residence.”
Tom Eppers was reportedly in a coma and on life support for about a week after the attack. Injuries he sustained in the attack include a brain hemorrhage, five shatter-like fractures, a broken jaw, broken ribs, a collapsed lung, multiple scalp wounds and pneumonia, according to the article. Dawn says it’s a miracle he’s making a recovery.
Now, less than 5 months following the attack, Tom has finished therapy and rehabilitation and is set to have reconstructive surgery this summer.
When dealing with TBI , the fastest improvement typically happens in about the first six months after injury, according to Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center ( MSKTC). During this time, the injured person will likely show many improvements and may seem to be steadily getting better.
The person continues to improve between six months and two years after injury, but this varies for different people and may not happen as fast as the first six months. Improvements slow down substantially after two years but may still occur many years after injury. Most people continue to have some problems, although they may not be as bad as they were early after injury. Rate of improvement varies from person to person.
“Tom Eppers, a father of four and grandfather of three, is more laid back than before the incident, Dawn Eppers said in the article. “He tires easily, but has been able to go back to working part time at Dowe and Wagner Inc. , the heating and cooling business he’s co-owned for more than 20 years.”
