According to media reports, the girl is 11-years old and alcohol seems to have played a factor in the incident.
“Rochester Police Capt. John Sherwin said officers were called to a hit and run crash involving a pedestrian on the 2000 block of 17th Street SE at 3:08 p.m. Tuesday,” according to an article by KTTC. “Sherwin said an 11-year-old girl suffered a broken wrist, broken thumb, and a head injury in the crash. The girl told officers that she was on the grass when she was struck by a car.”
Witnesses reportedly told police a description of the vehicle that fled the scene. The car was later found abandoned at a gas station on Marion Road. Eventually, police officers located a man that witnesses confirmed was the man who was the driver who struck the young girl. The man was located across the street, north of Kwick Trip.
The man, reportedly from Rochester, appeared to be under the influence of something and when officers completed a field sobriety test, he failed it.
Hussein Haaji was arrested and is facing charges of criminal vehicle operation causing bodily harm and DUI.
Even after a minor head injury , brain function can be temporarily impaired and this is sometimes referred to as concussion, according to information on Headway, the Brain Injury Association. This can lead to difficulties such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue, depression, irritability and memory problems. While most people are symptom-free within two weeks, some can experience problems for months or even years after a minor head injury.
The more severe the brain injury , the more pronounced the long-term effects are likely to be. Survivors of more severe brain injury are likely to have complex long-term problems affecting their personality, their relationships and their ability to lead an independent life. Even with good rehabilitation, support and help in the community, survivors and their families are likely to face uncertain and challenging futures.
KTTC did not release information regarding the extent of the girl’s brain injury.
