A teenager is dead and several others were injured following a crash on Halloween night in Oneida.
According to various media reports, a van carrying five teenage boys flipped and a 13-year-old Seymour boy was killed as a result of the crash.
“Action 2 News has learned a Town of Oneida firefighter who responded to the scene suffered chest pains and died,” an article posted on the WBAY website reads. “Fire Chief Chet Olson says the 65-year-old firefighter complained of feeling ill while setting up a landing zone for the medical helicopter, and was pronounced dead after being transported to a Green Bay hospital.”
The teenager who died as a result of the crash has been identified as Braxton Kasee. He was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, where he died.
“The minivan was the only vehicle involved in the crash off Bain Road at about 10 o’clock Monday night. The minivan was traveling west on Bain Road when the driver, an 18-year-old, lost control near County Highway U, rolled, and hit the utility pole,” the article reads. “Four other teenagers, all males, were transported by ambulance. They’ve all been released from the hospital. The sheriff’s office says they’re all from Seymour.”
The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office told reporters that everyone in the van was wearing a seat belt, and investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors. Investigators are still unsure as to why the driver lost control. The incident remains under investigation.
“They failed to stop at a stop sign. We still have investigators out right now going through evidence, interviewing the occupants and witnesses, and we’re trying to figure out what the actual cause of the accident was that caused them to roll and hit the power pole,” Sgt. Ryan Carpenter of the sheriff’s office said in the article. “When you have a traffic crash that involves a fatality it’s a very difficult and sad situation every time, but when it’s something involving a group of teens and a teenager that’s killed it’s even more so.”
The firefighter who died has been identified by the U.S. Fire Administration as John C. Brocker. Brocker’s cause of death is listed as a heart attack by stress/overexertion.
Electricity was temporarily knocked out in the surrounding area after the SUV hit the power pole. Wisconsin Public Service was on scene until early last Tuesday morning, according to the news report.
“Outagamie and Brown County sheriff’s departments, and Oneida, Hobart-Lawrence, and Seymour emergency personnel all responded to the scene,” the article reads.
A GoFundMe campaign was set up for Braxton’s family.
