A teenager was struck by two vehicles last Monday in Oshkosh, according to various media reports.
The 15-year-old was reportedly crossing Witzel Avenue on foot. She is currently recovering from her injuries.
“The Oshkosh police and fire departments responded about 4:30 p.m. Monday to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a car at Witzel Avenue and Westbrook Drive, police said,” according to a news article by the Oshkosh Northwestern. “A witness told investigators the girl was walking across the street in a crosswalk near Westbrook Avenue when a Toyota Camry hit her, according to a release from Oshkosh Police Lieutenant Kevin Konrad.”
The girl was thrown across the center line of the road and into the path of a Dodge Ram pickup truck, which also hit her, the release stated. She was reportedly taken to a local hospital with injuries to her head and pelvis. The extent of those injuries were not released in the article, but she was in stable condition last Tuesday morning, according to the news report.
“Police are not yet releasing information about the drivers, as Konrad said the investigation and accident report are not completed. Witzel Avenue was closed Monday from Washburn Street to Westbrook Drive while authorities responded to the scene and investigated the crash ,” the article reads.
According to Wisconsin Pedestrian Laws, at an intersection or crosswalk where traffic is controlled by traffic control signals or by a traffic officer, the operator of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian, or to a person who is riding a bicycle or electric personal assistive mobility device in a manner which is consistent with the safe use of the crosswalk by pedestrians, who has started to cross the highway on a green or “Walk” signal and in all other cases pedestrians, bicyclists, and riders of electric personal assistive mobility devices shall yield the right-of-way to vehicles lawfully proceeding directly ahead on a green signal.
No operator of a vehicle proceeding ahead on a green signal may begin a turn at a controlled intersection or crosswalk when a pedestrian, bicyclist, or rider of an electric personal assistive mobility device crossing in the crosswalk on a green or “Walk” signal would be endangered or interfered with in any way.
At an intersection or crosswalk where traffic is not controlled by traffic control signals or by a traffic officer, the operator of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian, or to a person riding a bicycle or electric personal assistive mobility device in a manner which is consistent with the safe use of the crosswalk by pedestrians, who is crossing the highway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
No pedestrian, bicyclist, or rider of an electric personal assistive mobility device shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk, run, or ride into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is difficult for the operator of the vehicle to yield. Whenever any vehicle is stopped at an intersection or crosswalk to permit a pedestrian, bicyclist, or rider of an electric personal assistive mobility device to cross the roadway, the operator of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass the stopped vehicle.
There’s no mention in the article as to whether either of the drivers might face charges in connection to the incident.
