A Grand Rapids man was critically injured last week when he was using a tractor trailer to blow snow near his residence and was struck by a pickup truck in the process.
According to various media reports, the incident occurred on Monday evening about 5:43 p.m. The man who was struck by the pickup, who was listed in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon, was 57-years-old.
“The man was on a lawn tractor with a snow-blowing attachment when he backed out of his driveway in the 6000 block of Whitrock Avenue and onto the road at about 5:43 p.m. Monday,” an article posted on the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune website reads.
The man was reportedly trying to reposition the tractor in order to continue blowing snow, according to a Grand Rapids Police Department crash report.
Another man from Wisconsin Rapids was driving a pickup with a snowplow attached to the front of the truck. He drove down Whitrock Avenue and reportedly did not see the Grand Rapids man who was on the tractor in the road, and struck him.
“The tractor had an amber strobe light on it, but the pickup driver did not see it, according to the report,” the article reads. “The impact caused the tractor to overturn and the man to be thrown to the ground, according to the report.”
The 57-year-old Grand Rapids man was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Riverview Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
There’s no mention in the article whether anyone is facing any charges in connection to the crash.
Grand Rapids City ordinance requires that property owners clear all ice and snow, down to the concrete, from public sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of a snow fall, according to the city’s website page.
If the City receives a complaint about a sidewalk that has not been cleared, the property owner is mailed a written notice of the violation. If the sidewalk is not cleared within 48 hours following the notice, the City will hire a contractor to complete the work and bill the property owner for the labor.
Individuals needing assistance in clearing sidewalks are asked to contract a private snow-plowing company or seek possible alternatives via the United Way (2-1-1) or their neighborhood association.
