A documentary that follows a traumatic brain injury survivor and her family debuted this weekend in Delaware. The documentary was five years in the making.
The documentary, entitled “Brain Crumbs” follows Corey Beattie and shares an inside look into how the family has used cooking therapy to help with Beattie’s recovery. Beattie was in a vehicle crash in 2010 that left her with permanent brain damage.
A screening of “Brain Crumbs” took place April 22, at the Penn Cinema Riverfront & Imax theater at 401 South Madison Street in Wilmington, Del. A panel of traumatic brain injury experts were also on hand after the showing for a question-and-answer session, according to an article by the Chester County Press.
It was a private screening with limited ticket availability.
According to Corey’s mother, Marie, Corey was a senior in high school at the time of her injury and was planning to pursue a career as a chef.
“Our unique approach is highlighted by interviews from an anthropologist from the University of Pennsylvania discussing the history of food and why food heals,” Marie Beattie explained. “In addition, a neuro-behavioral psychologist discusses why Corey’s memory is enhanced by the unique therapy.”
A family friend produced, wrote and directed the documentary through his production company Farmcat Media.
Farmcat Media also created Corey’s website and blog, www.recoverythyme.com , which she is using as part of the cognitive therapy.
Corey will be posting recipes on the site, and will be adding resource links for traumatic brain injury survivors and their families.
Marie told the Chester County Press they hope to enter the full-length feature film in festivals while also using it as a tool to spread awareness about traumatic brain injury and the recovery process involved when dealing with brain injuries. They also hope it helps other families and victims of traumatic brain injury.
Several films and documentaries about brain injuries have been created including, but not limited to, “Crush,” “Midnight Clear,” “The Vow,” “Broken,” and “My Beautiful Broken Brain.”
