New Public Service Announcement highlights TBI

The Brain Injury Association of America along with Helius Medical Technologies has released a new Public Service Announcement called “Tackling TBI.” The announcement features patient and veteran advocate Montel Williams and former NFL player Marvin Washington.

The PSA was created with the intent of bringing awareness to health issues and to provide patients with education, resources and encouragement to participate in clinical trials to support the development of new therapies for traumatic brain injury.

“Currently more than 5.3 million Americans in the U.S. live with a lifelong disability as a result of a TBI and there are 1.7 million new cases each year,” Montel Williams says in the announcement. “Our goal is to ensure that the public at large understands the problem and that patients and caregivers understand where to go for resources that can help.”

The PSA featuring Williams and Washington reminds viewers that a TBI can range from subtle to severe, symptoms can take years to progress and that it’s important to speak with a doctor or healthcare professional if they think they’ve had a brain injury , according to a press release posted on Yahoo Finance .

“We are proud to partner on the launch of this PSA initiative to raise awareness and understanding of brain injury,” said Susan Connors, president and chief executive officer of the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA). “A diagnosis of TBI can be the start of a misdiagnosed and misunderstood neurological disease. We need to continue to provide help, hope and healing for the millions of Americans who sustain this life-altering, sometimes devastating, injury.”

A TBI is an injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain and can be caused by a host of things such as sports, car accidents , military service, trips, slips or falls. For many people, TBI causes fatigue, headaches, and difficulty with balance or motor skills, slurred speech, or seizures.

$8.3 Million Verdict in a Negligent Security Case for TBI and PTSD

After an ongoing struggle to bring justice to the victim of an attack at a Wisconsin diabetes clinic, attorney Randy Rozek of Rozek Law Offices, S.C. has won an $8.3 million victory in which a jury found hospital security at fault for the attack and the client’s resulting injuries. In 2014, Rozek’s client was in the waiting room of the diabetes clinic at a local children’s hospital when a 16-year-old girl with a history of violence viciously assaulted her. The victim, who was accompanied by her two young children, was “punched repeatedly in the face and head, had chunks of hair pulled from her head and was struck in the head with a chair,” Rozek said. The children, aged 9 and 11 at the time, were so frightened by the brutal beating that they fled to a stairwell for safety, fearing their mother had been killed by the attacker and that they would be next if the attacker was to find them. Rozek’s client survived the assault, but still struggles with symptoms of a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) following the attack.

The American Association for Justice (AAJ) is the largest group of legal advocates for justice in the country.
