Several people who have suffered traumatic brain injury took paintbrushes to rocks to hopefully spread awareness about what it’s like to live with a brain injury.
The project, which was held in Kentucky, was organized by Janice Osborne Dowdy. Dowdy works as a speech language pathologist, according to an article posted by The Daily Independent.
Dowdy instructed the TBI patients as they used paintbrushes to slather rocks with a coat of white paint. The idea was born when Dowdy saw a news broadcast about a similar rock project used to raise awareness to spread kindness in Ohio.
All of the artists involved in the project are participants in a brain injury rehabilitation program called NeuroRestorative.
“They hope that the rocks that they are adorning with paint will serve as an educational tool for the community about what it’s like to live with a TBI,” the article reads.
Dowdy said the group will spread the rocks throughout the town after they’ve been painted.
“We do a group every morning at NeuroRestorative to work on orientation and I showed the clip from (an) episode (on CBS about the Ohio project) to our participants and they thought that would be great idea for us to jump on board to raise awareness for TBIs, since March is Brain Injury Awareness Month,” Dowdy explains in the article.
The rocks also don a green ribbon that’s been painted on them, which is related to brain injury awareness. On the backs of the rocks, artists painted a hashtag that says TBI.
“We’re hoping that hashtag TBI will help more people find out information and research resources about Traumatic Brain Injuries.”
Dowdy said the rocks will be placed in specific places throughout the community in hopes that residents will stumble upon them and share them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag.
“ If you enjoy the rock take it with you, or leave it where it is for the next person to find,” Dowdy said. “We’re hoping this will encourage the community to look into NeuroRestorative and what we do here …”
